FOUR NEWCOMERS IN ENGLAND UNDER-16 SIDE TO FACE SCOTLAND
England will field four players new to international team
golf in the ten man team for the annual under-16 clash with
Scotland at Gullane on Sunday 2nd October.
The four are Tim Chatfield (Wentworth), Tommy Fleetwood (Formby
Hall), Jack Sant (Ladbrook Park) and Henry Smart (Walton Heath).
The rest of the line-up is Ashley Chesters (Hawkstone Park),
Andrew Johnston (North Middlesex), Tom Lewis (Mid Herts),
Adam Myers (Northants County), Darren Renwick (Worthing),
and Adam Wills (Sandiway).
Chatfield, from Surrey, has been a winner in the Faldo Series
and represented the EGU in this summer’s Dutch Junior
Masters.
Fleetwood, one of the youngest members of the side at 14,
finished runner-up in this year’s English Under 16 Boys
Stroke Play Championship for the McGregor Trophy while he
also won the Lancashire Boys Under 15 Championship. He also
starred in the English Amateur Championship at Bromborough
this year when he took ex-Walker Cup man Michael Skelton to
the final green before losing.
Sant won two of his three singles and took three points from
six matches for Warwickshire in the Boys County Finals at
Little Aston a few weeks ago and has produced good performances
in the Faldo Series.
Smart, from Surrey, finished fourth in this year’s
McGregor Trophy and joint fifth in the Scottish Under 16 Championship.
Chesters, a former Shropshire and Herefordshire boy and junior
match play champion, is the current Midland boys champion.
He played in last year’s annual match against the England
Girls under 18 team and was a representative for England in
the Nations Cup prior to this year’s McGregor Trophy.
Johnston is a former Middlesex under 14 and boys champion
who also played in the Nations Cup prior to this year’s
McGregor Trophy in which eh finished tied fourth.
Lewis, another 14 year old, finished joint winner of the
Hazards Trophy (the under 16 award) in the English Boys Under
18 Championship for the Carris Trophy at Moor Park. He also
finished third in the English Boys Under 14 Championship for
the Reid Trophy and made his international debut in the under
16 match with Spain at Pannal a few weeks ago.
Myers, also 14, is the under 16 champion following his victory
in the McGregor Trophy at Radcliffe on Trent in July. He also
finished runner-up in the Northamptonshire Championship and
tied fourth in the Reid Trophy and represented the EGU in
the European Young Masters in Austria.
Sussex-based Renwick, 15, is the only member of the side
to have played in last year’s match against Scotland
at Woodhall Spa. He finished fourth in last year’s McGregor
Trophy and this year he has won the Scottish Under 16 Championship
and the Douglas Johns Trophy and was tied third in the South
East Junior Championship.
Wills finished runner-up in the Cheshire Boys Championship
this year, tied seventh in the McGregor Trophy and was a member
of one of the Nations Cup teams prior to the McGregor Trophy.

All the above, plus Jonathan Bell (Royal Blackheath) and
Billy Downing (Truro), have been chosen to represent England
in the annual 12-a-side match against the England Girls Under
18 side at Long Ashton Golf Club, Bristol, on Sunday 9th October.
Hiluta, who is drafted into the side in place of Chatfield,
named as reserve, played in the Essex side in the recent Boys
County Finals at Little Aston and is another who has tasted
victory in this year’s Faldo Series.
Bell won the English Boys Under 14 Championship for the Reid
Trophy in 2004 and was runner-up to Renwick in this year’s
Douglas Johns Trophy.
Downing, from Cornwall, the youngest selected at 13, finished
runner-up in the 2003 Reid Trophy at Porters Park. He was
also tied fourth in this year’s McGregor Trophy and
equal tenth in the Reid Trophy.
