HORSEY AND WOLSTENHOLME OFF TO ARGENTINA
David Horsey, winner of the English County Champions Tournament,
and six-time Walker Cup man Gary Wolstenholme will be England's
representatives in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup in Argentina
next month.
The pair will tackle the annual tournament at its traditional
home, the Los Lagartos Country Club in Buenos Aires on 1st
- 4th December.
The two players may be at opposite ends of the golfing spectrum
as far as age, achievement and experience are concerned but
they have the ability to extend England's fine record in the
event.
Horsey
(pictured), 20, a former North of England Schools Champion,
came to national attention when he finished runner-up in last
year's English Amateur Championship at Hollinwell. He then
represented the EGU in the Greek Amateur and earned a place
in the England A training squad.
This year his career has blossomed with victory in the Cheshire
Championship followed by his triumph in the County Champions
tournament at Woodhall Spa in which he shot 64, breaking the
Hotchkin Course record by two strokes. A return trip to the
Greek Amateur late in the season capped a great year as this
time he returned home with the title.
This fine form has seen him promoted to the EGU Elite Squad
for the winter training schedule and for 2006.
Wolstenholme, 45, is the consummate amateur. England's most
capped player, he played in his sixth Walker Cup in Chicago
in August and has amassed a wealth of experience since making
his international debut in 1988 as well as a long list of
titles both at home and abroad.
This will be his second appearance in the Juan Carlos Tailhade
Cup, following his victory in partnership with Nick Dougherty
in 2000.
England also won this 72-hole, two-man team event, in which
both players' scores count, in 2001 through Zane Scotland
and David Skinns, and in 2003 with Gary Lockerbie and Michael
Skelton. Last year, Lee Corfield and Matthew Richardson finished
runners-up.
