FISHER IN RUNNING FOR BBC AWARD
England's Oliver Fisher is one of the top ten nominees for
BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year Award.
He
may be the youngest member of England's Elite Squad, just
turning seventeen in September, but he is one of the finest
prospects to emerge in English golf in recent years. A series
of successes in the past twelve months culminated with a Walker
Cup call-up when again his skills defied his age and he became
the youngest ever player to tee off at the most prestigious
of amateur championships and remained unbeaten in his singles
matches at the event.
Other achievements during the year included the Men's European
Team Championship which England won for the first time in
fourteen years, the England winning team at the Spirit International
Amateur Championship - described as the 'Olympics of Amateur
Golf', winner of the Faldo Series for the second consecutive
year, setting a new course record of 63 at Celtic Manor in
the process and becoming the Duke of York Young Champions
Trophy Winner.
Fisher, who is a member of the West Essex Golf Club, has
benefited from the English Golf Union's coaching programme
and has risen through the Boys team before becoming a regular
selection for the Elite Squad representing his country at
some of amateur golf's most important events on an international
stage. England's Elite Squad forms part of the England Golf
Partnership's 'Team England Golf' that aims to identify, train
and produce the best golfers in the world.
A judging panel will make the final decision as to who becomes
the Young Sports Personality of the Year and this year the
contenders are considered to be one of the strongest groups
seen in the awards five-year history.
