SKINNS AND CAMPBELL COMPLETE CLEAN SWEEP IN MEXICO
David Skinns and Lloyd Campbell brought further glory to
English golf when they completed a clean sweep in the Mexican
Amateur Championship at the Club Campestre de la Cuidad de
Mexico in Mexico City.
Skinns, the 23 year old international from Lincolnshire,
won the individual title by a stroke while he and Campbell
carried off the International Paris or Nations Cup by seven
strokes from Argentina.
The English pair, both studying at the University of Tennessee
at Knoxville, have been enjoying a successful spell in college
golf in the United States and travelled to Mexico in good
form. But after a disappointing opening 75, Skinns was well
down the field, while Campbell, from Kent, started with a
70 for joint second spot. The roles were reversed on day two
with 20 year old Campbell falling back after a 77 while Skinns
climbed the leaderboard with a 70.
Going into the final day, Skinns was lying joint fourth on
217, five strokes off the lead, held by Florian Fritsch from
Germany. By while the German struggled to a closing 76, Skinns
produced his lowest round of the event, a 68 for a tally of
285, three under par, and a one shot victory from Sebastian
Saavedra of Argentina and Germany’s Benjamin Miarka.
Campbell finished ninth on 292 after a final round 70.
However, the English pair were virtually untouchable in the
race for the Pairs event, their combined tally of 577 leaving
them seven strokes ahead of the Argentine duo of Saavedra
and Estanisiao Goya.
Skinns is the second English player to win the Mexican title
in recent years, following Jamie Elson’s success in
2002.
