EGU TO INTRODUCE NATIONS CUP AS PART OF McGREGOR TROPHY
The English Boys Under 16 Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship
for the McGregor Trophy has become increasingly popular as
an International event in recent years.
Players from many European countries as well as the Home
Nations are regular participants alongside English youngsters
while there has been the occasional entry from further a field.
The title has also been won by non-British players on three
occasions, by Eduardo Molinari in 1996 and by his fellow Italian
Roberto Paolillo in 1997 and by Wouter de Vries from the Netherlands
in 2003.
Consequently, the English Golf Union is proposing to further
enhance the Championship by introducing a Nations Cup which
will replace the annual under 16 International with Italy
that precedes the Championship.
This will be inaugurated at the 2005 event when the English
Boys’ Under 16 Championship returns to Radcliffe-on-Trent
Golf Club, near Nottingham, its traditional home, on 29th
June - 1st July.
A new Nations Cup Trophy has been presented by Mr Roy Case,
Chairman of the England Boys Selections Committee, and the
late Mrs Jean Case.
Each Union/Federation will be eligible to enter a maximum
of 2 teams of up to 3 Boys each.
Subject to the Boys having a handicap which meets the McGregor
Trophy handicap limit and are under 16 as of the 1st of January
in which the event is to be run.
Should a Union/Federation include a Player in their team(s)
whose handicap is higher than the subsequent ballot handicap
to gain entry into the McGregor Trophy then that Player will
NOT be eligible to play in the Nations Cup and the McGregor
Trophy. The Nations Cup will be played for over the first
36 holes of the McGregor Trophy and will be decided by the
best aggregate 2 from 3 scores each round.
In the event of a tie the Nations Cup will be shared.
The names of the teams are to be made known to the English
Golf Union Championship Department on or before the closing
date for the McGregor Trophy.
Substitutions may be made, provided the replacement fulfils
all the age and handicap requirements, at the discretion of
the Championship Committee. Any such replacement will take
the starting time of the Player he is replacing. (There will
be NO exception to this condition).
There will be no entry fee into the Nations Cup the only
entry fee applicable is that into the McGregor Trophy.
Entry forms for the Nations Cup have already been sent to
every Member of the European Golf Association and a wide response
is expected.
