ENGLAND BOYS TAKE THIRD IN WORLD JUNIOR GOLF CUP
In a competition that included some of the world’s
best young players, England’s teenagers secured third
place in the Toyota World Junior Golf Cup Challenge with a
final score of 839. The achievement guarantees England a place
in the tournament in 2006.
The event was won by the United States with a score of 824
who claimed the trophy by 12 stokes over Colombia. The individual
trophy was won by an Erik Flores from the USA, who finished
six shots ahead of Japan’s Yuki Usami, with as score
of 268.
England’s team held the lead at the end of day two,
with an excellent performance from Yorkshire’s Daniel
Willett who achieved the best score of the day with a round
of 68. However the United States improved on their previous
scores in the final half of the competition and England were
not able to hold off the challenge from the Colombian team
and had to settle for bronze position.
Willett was the highest placed member of the England team
taking joint fourth place with a score of 276.
England have an excellent record at the event. They were
winners in 1998, 1999 and 2002, runners-up once and now have
achieved third place on three occasions.
