DINWIDDIE TAKES SCOTTISH TROPHY TO ENGLAND
The Scottish Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship has been
won by English player Robert Dinwiddie, who has taken the
trophy south of the border for only the third time in the
Championship’s history.
Dinwiddie, 22, from the Barnard Castle Golf Club, took the
honours with 3 strokes to spare delivering a final score of
281 beating a high quality international field. He took the
Championship lead, played from 10th – 12th June, at
the halfway stage with a second round of 68 and, as only one
of only three players to break 70 in the third round with
69, he strengthened his lead to five shots before going into
the final day’s play.
Despite a score of 74 on the last day, his only round over
par, Dinwiddie held onto first place in style and emulated
the success of his current England team mate Gary Wolstenholme,
who took the title for England in 2003 and the previous English
winner Gordon Clark 30 years earlier.
Dinwiddie, who recently graduated from Tennessee State University,
is rated the number one English college golfer in the US according
to the Golfstat rankings. His six wins on the college circuit
in 2004 clearly played a part in ensuring his full England
debut for the winning side at the Home Internationals last
year. He now is aiming for a repeat performance at the Welsh
Championship, which starts on 17th June.
Another England player Gary Lockerbie, who currently leads
the English Golf Union’s Ping Order of Merit, took 5th
place in the Championship continuing his excellent form shown
throughout the 2005 season to date.
