HAYLOCK ONE OF FOUR NEW CAPS IN BOYS HOME INTERNATIONALS
SQUAD
Thomas Haylock, the newly crowned English Boy champion, has
been named in the England team that will defend the Boys Home
Internationals being played over the Hotchkin Course at Woodhall
Spa on 2nd - 4th August.
Haylock is one of four new caps in the team, the others being
Jamie Abbott from Suffolk, Hampshire-based Sam Hutsby and
Haylock’s Hertfordshire colleague James Watts.
The rest of what is a powerful line-up includes the complete
squad from the European Boys Team Championships in Italy earlier
this month - Jake Amos, Stephen Capper, Matthew Evans, Tom
Oliver, Tom Sherreard, and Daniel Willett - plus Ben Parker.
The non-travelling reserve is Daniel Brooks.
Haylock, 18, is enjoying a highly successful season. He led
the Berkhamsted Trophy at halfway after a course record 65;
eventually finishing tied fourth and then won the South East
Boys Championship prior to his English Boys triumph. At Moor
Park last week he finished with three successive rounds of
70 for a nine under par tally of 283 and a five-shot winning
margin over Brooks, Hutsby and Willett.
Hutsby, 16, was capped by England at under 16 level and is
now a member of the England under 18 training squad. He won
the Courage Trophy at his home club of Lee on Solent and finished
third in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters last month before
his joint runner-up spot in last week’s Carris Trophy
at Moor Park.
Abbott, 18, has been turning in some impressive performances
including winning the Suffolk Matchplay Championship. He also
finishing leading scorer with two 68s when representing Suffolk
in the South East Boys Qualifying and was tied ninth in last
week’s Carris Trophy.
Watts, 17, was capped at under 16 level against Scotland
and Spain last year after finishing tied fifth in the McGregor
Trophy. Won the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters last month
ahead of Evans and Hutsby and is one of a group of promising
Hertfordshire youngsters.
Of the six players who steered England to ninth place in
the European Boys Team Championships in Italy, Sherreard,
18, won the McEvoy Trophy in April with Amos, 18, runner-up
and Capper, 17, and Willett, 17, joint third. Willett was
also third in the Tillman Trophy.
Parker, 18, who is based in Germany where his father is a
club professional, is the only survivor of the side that won
the Boys Home Internationals in Ireland a year ago.
England have won the Boys Home Internationals for the past
seven years. Previous to that Ireland were the winners in
1997.
