CHAMPION CRYER SET TO DEFEND CZECH AMATEUR TITLE
Matthew Cryer, winner of the Czech Amateur Championship a
year ago, will defend the title next month.
The 30 year old Midlander will be part of a three-man team
selected to represent the English Golf Union in the championship
being played over 72 holes at the Royal Golf Club Marianske
Lazne on 3rd - 6th August.
He will be accompanied by David Horsey (Styal) and Neil Walker
(Rotherham), the trio making up the England team that will
defend the Nations Cup, also captured last year.
Cryer, who finished runner-up in the Portuguese Amateur Championship
at Estela earlier this year, is a regular winner in the Midland
region, a fact confirmed by his recent victory in the Midland
Closed Championship. His victory in the Czech Championship
at Karlovy Vary last August came with a closing 72 for 281,
three strokes clear of the field.
Horsey, 20, achieved a big breakthrough a year ago when he
finished runner-up in the English Amateur Championship at
Notts Golf Club, Hollinwell. He recently won the Cheshire
Championship and like Cryer, is a member of the England A
training squad. This year he has been to South Africa for
warm weather training and was a member of the victorious England
team in the Costa Ballena Quadrangular tournament in Spain,
winning all his matches.
Walker, 21, is one of a burgeoning group of young players
at the Rotherham club. This year he has finished fifth in
the West of England Stroke Play Championship, 13th in the
Brabazon Trophy and equal sixth in the Tillman Trophy.
The Czech Amateur Championship attracts an international
field, which will be cut to the leading 70 players and ties
after two rounds. There will be a further cut after 54 holes
when the best 40 players and ties will contest the final round.
The Nations Cup will be decided over the opening two rounds,
the best two scores from three to count each day.
