HORSEY INCLUDED IN COSTA BALLENA SQUAD

David Horsey, beaten finalist in the English Amateur Championship in 2004, is included in a six-strong England team competing in the Costa Ballena Quadrangular match in Spain at the end of January.

The 2004 England boys captain Matthew Baldwin, along with Daniel Denison, Kevin Harper, Jamie Moul and John Parry will accompany the Cheshire-based Horsey.

The team will face opposition from Finland, Germany and Spain at Costa Ballena and, as members of England’s Elite and A squads, will gain invaluable international competition in preparation for the coming season.

Horsey’s career reached a new level when he battled through to the final of the English Amateur last July. In a run of seven matches he won over Midlands Youth champion James Ruebotham, fellow England B Squad member William Bowe and Brabazon Trophy winner Matthew Richardson among others. In the final, Horsey lost the first five holes to international James Heath but mounted a spirited fight back to eventually lose 3 and 2.

Baldwin, 18, last year captained England squads to victory in the European Boys Team Championships in Finland as well as the Boys Home Internationals. The Lancashire champion finished third in the Carris Trophy, carded a course record 13 under par 61 in winning the Silver Pheasant at Fairhaven, and is a former winner of the English under 16 Championship for the McGregor Trophy. He is also a member of the 2005 Walker Cup squad.

Denison, another 18 year old, helped Yorkshire win the Boys’ County Finals in 2002 and 2003 as well as sharing it with Essex last year. In a successful 2003 he finished joint winner of the Carris Trophy, the boys’ under-18 championship and made his international debut in the European Boys’ Team Championships before playing in the Boys’ Home Internationals and for GB&I in the Jacques Leglise Trophy. A member of England’s A squad, Denison played at Costa Ballena in 2004 as well as in the Peugeot Classic in France while finishing joint runner-up in the Lagonda Trophy.

Harper, at 23 will be the oldest member of the team visiting Spain. A member of the England B Squad last year, he has been promoted to the A Squad for 2005. A former Devon Youths champion, he lost a play-off for the South West Championship last year, and has been a member of the Devon side in the past two English County Championships, with Devon lifting the title in 2003.

Moul, 20, from Suffolk, is a former boy cap who made his full England debut against France at Royal St George’s, Sandwich, last May and was a member of the side that finished runners-up in the European Youths Team Championships in July.

Parry, another 18 year old from Yorkshire, has always been a top prospect and lived up to that promise last year. His season started with an outstanding victory in the McEvoy Trophy, a third place in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and runner-up position in the Carris Trophy. He also helped England win the European Boys Team Championships and the Boys Home Internationals at Portmarnock. Parry also played a part in GB&I’s victory over Europe in the Jacques Leglise Trophy and helped Yorkshire share the Boys County Championship with Essex. He completed a hectic season by finishing second in the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship at Sun City, then represented England in the Junior Orange Bowl International in the United States at Christmas.

The inaugural International Match Costa Ballena Golf in 2001 saw England emerge victorious against Germany, Sweden and Spain. But for the past two years England have finished runners-up. The Costa Ballena competition is played on a round robin basis, each match comprising three morning foursomes and six afternoon singles.
