ENGLAND’S FIRST WIN OF 2005 AT COSTA BALLENA
England has secured their first team victory of 2005 by winning
the Costa Ballena Quadrangular match in Spain. Played over
three days, concluding on 28th January, England overcame opposition
from teams representing Finland, Germany and Spain.
The Costa Ballena competition is played on a round robin
basis, each match comprising three morning foursomes and six
afternoon singles. Combined scores from day one saw England
defeat Finland 5-4. On day two England again came out on top
with a win over Spain 5½-3½. On the final day
the foursomes were cancelled due to bad weather, however England
defeated Germany 4-2 in the singles matches.
Captain and Team Manager, Cecil Bloice commented, “Both
the performance and attitude of the whole team was outstanding
and they thoroughly deserved their win. It’s a real
achievement to take first place having come runners up for
the past two years”
The team, which consisted of members of both the England
Elite and A Squads, now has the added benefit of an early
confidence boost as well as valuable overseas experience to
take forward to future 2005 tournaments.
