ENGLAND SQUADS BEGIN PREPARATION FOR 2005 SEASON
England’s Elite & “A” Squads will begin
their preparation for the 2005 season at a Warm Weather Training
session in South Africa.
The 10-strong Elite Squad departs on Monday 10th January
for a week long training camp which is a continuation of the
World Class Performance Programme winter training schedule
in preparation for a hectic season of training and competition
both at home and abroad.
They will be followed by the A Squad who will fly in to replace
the Elite squad who return to England on Monday 17th January.
The Warm Weather Training will be held at the Fancourt Resort
near George, scene of the 2003 Presidents Cup and venue for
the 2005 Women’s World Cup in February.
The Elite & A squads will have access to world class
training facilities and expert advice from a quality support
team comprising National Coach Keith Williams plus technical
coach David Ridley, psychologist Brian Hemmings, physiotherapist
Paul Darby and Performance Director Nigel Furniss.
The itinerary will also provide an opportunity for agreeing
playing and training schedules for the coming season along
with goal setting and identification of individual targets
focusing on the major international events for 2005.
English Golf Union Performance Director, Nigel Furniss, explained:
“The Warm Weather Training camp will provide the England
Elite & "A" Squads with an excellent opportunity
to continue their training and preparation at first class
facilities prior to the start of the 2005 playing season.”
“There will be a strong emphasis on the short game,
as well as fitness and psychological sessions every day. We
will also be setting targets for the coming season along with
a planned schedule for each player.”
National Coach, Keith Williams commented, “The support
team are eager to continue the good work covered to date through
the World Class Performance Programme. It is crucial that
our players have the opportunity to work with quality coaches
and have access to tournament standard greens which you cannot
replicate in England at this time of year.”
“This will be the third winter training session for
both the Elite & "A" Squads continuing the great
work which has been delivered in the October and November
sessions. We are bringing the Elite Squad in particular together
on a more regular basis this year and moving the training
programme to another level.”
The EGU World Class Performance Programme funded through
the Sport England Lottery Fund is aimed at giving the England
