WOLSTENHOLME TRIUMPHS IN AUSTRALIA
England Elite Squad member Gary Wolstenholme (Kilworth Springs)
extended his portfolio of triumphs when he became the first
Englishman to win the New South Wales Medal in Sydney, Australia
on Sunday 6th February.
Wolstenholme had two final rounds of 67 & 70 on the tough
Pymble course for a winning total of 277, 11 under par and
two ahead of Ireland’s Sean McTernan.
The top 32 players in the New South Wales Medal move on to
contest the New South Wales Championship at Elanora Country
Club, which begins on Wednesday 9th February. This is a tough
schedule with each match being played over 36 holes.
Nigel Furniss, English Golf Union Performance Director commented:
“This is a great win for Gary. Beating a high quality
field of international players, particularly with the Australian’s
in the middle of their playing season it confirms he is one
of the best amateur golfers in the world at present. Gary’s
work ethic and determination never cease to amaze me, this
is what keeps him at the top of the amateur game and able
to compete with the young up and coming stars.”
Two other members of England’s World Class Performance
Programme also competed; James Ruth (Tavistock) returned a
four round total of 292 to finish in the top 32 and makes
the cut for the New South Wales Championship but Lawrence
Dodd (Thetford) returned 295 to unfortunately miss out by
one shot.
