ENGLAND’S WALKER CUP STARS LEAD PING-EGU ORDER OF
MERIT
In the week prior to the Walker Cup the quality of England’s
players is reflected in the PING-EGU Order of Merit with Gary
Lockerbie maintaining his lead at the top of the table.
Lockerbie, who is currently in Chicago preparing for the
Walker Cup with his Great Britain and Ireland teammates, has
played consistently well this season. Based at Penrith Golf
Club, his achievements in 2005 include winning the Lytham
Trophy, finishing sixth in the Brabazon Trophy, joint third
in the St Andrews Links Trophy and taking fifth spot in the
Scottish Amateur. Lockerbie also made the fifth round of the
British Amateur before losing to the Irishman Brian McElhinney,
who went on to ultimately win the title.
Lockerbie’s lead at the top of the table is even more
impressive as he decided not to participate in the English
Amateur, a qualifying tournament for the PING-EGU Order of
Merit, as he wanted to focus on his training for the Walker
Cup challenge.
Jamie Moul (Stoke By Nayland), who was chosen as a reserve
for the Walker Cup, lies in second place on the Order of Merit,
over 300 points behind Lockerbie. He is followed by the youngster
Oliver Fisher (West Essex), sitting just 5 points behind Moul.
Fisher, who is only 16, is the youngest player ever to take
part in the Walker Cup.
PING have supported the EGU Order of Merit since 2003 when
it was won by Gary Wolstenholme (Kilworth Springs) and then
last year by Matthew Richardson (The Buckinghamshire). Both
players are also members of this years GB&I Walker Cup
team.
