PARRY BRINGS HOME THE BACON FROM THE DANISH AMATEUR
Yorkshire champion John Parry hit top form again when he
won the Danish Amateur Championship, which took place at Silkeborg
Golf Club over the weekend.
Parry’s win continued the recent strong performance
of English amateur golfers in International competition as
he took the trophy after a 3 hole play-off against Mark Haagstrop
of Denmark.
Haagstrop was the tournament leader and home country advantage
going into the final round after making initial scores of
68, 68. Parry had started the event well with a first round
score of 68 but faded in the second round with a 77 that left
him nine shots behind Haastrop.
The final round was played in difficult weather conditions,
and Haagstrop double bogied both the 7th, 12th and 13th holes
to finish with a round of 76. Parry however played consistently
well and was level par on the 14th hole before striking two
birdies at the 15th and 16th when play was suspended because
the greens were flooded. When play resumed Parry’s positive
play continued as he birdied the 17th and then parred the
dangerous 18th for a closing 67 to tie with Haagstrop.
The deciding play-off was over the 11th, 12th and 18th holes.
Parry played all three holes in par, while Haastrop dropped
a shot on the 11th and a further two shots on the 18th, leaving
the Yorkshireman the winner by three shots.
Parry, 18, is based at Harrogate Golf Club, has been a prominent
player on the Yorkshire and national scene for the past four
years. He was a member of the England teams that won the European
Boys Team Championship and the Boys Home Internationals in
2004 and has been a key player in the England A training squad
during 2005.
The win will give Parry the opportunity to widen his golfing
experience, as his victory gives him a place in the Danish
Open, a Challenge Tour event, and also the Vietnam Open, a
jointly sponsored European Tour/Asian Tour event.
