NEW CHAMPION MYERS LINES UP AGAINST THE SPANISH
Adam Myers, the 2005 English Boys under 16 champion, has
been selected along with three more of the country’s
brightest talents, to form the England team to face Spain
in the annual under 16 international at Pannal Golf Club,
Harrogate, on 23rd August.
Myers, from the Northants County Golf Club, will be joined
by Tim Chatfield (Wentworth), Andrew Johnston (North Middlesex)
and Darren Renwick (Worthing).
Despite his tender years, he is only 14, Myers finished runner-up
in the Northamptonshire County Championship and his victory
in the English under 16 Championship at Radcliffe on Trent
came with a closing round of 70 for a one stroke advantage
over Lancashire’s Tommy Fleetwood. He also finished
tied fourth in the English Under 14 Championship for the Reid
Trophy last week in Bristol.
Chatfield, 15, from Surrey is reaping the rewards of EGU
coaching in the South Region, which was underlined when he
shared the Hazards Salver, the under 16 award, with Tom Lewis
in the English Under 18 Championship for the Carris Trophy
at Moor Park.
Johnston, 16, is a former Middlesex under 14 champion and
runner-up in the county’s boys championship. He represented
England in the Nations Cup during the McGregor Trophy in which
he eventually finished tied fourth.
Renwick, 15, is arguably the most experienced of the quartet.
Fourth in last year’s McGregor Trophy at Dudsbury, he
was capped at under 16 level and was also played in the Nations
Cup during this year’s event. The Sussex lad is enjoying
a successful 2005, having won the Scottish Under 16 Championship
and the Douglas Johns Trophy as well as finishing tied third
in the South East Junior Championship at Sundridge Park.
This will be the third playing of the international with
Spain, the first match resulted in a win for England and the
second in a tie last year.
The match is fought out over two foursomes and four singles
matches.
