LEADING ENGLAND TRIO TARGET US AMATEUR TOP PRIZE
Three of the leading England players will be flying the flag
at the 105th US Amateur Championship next week.
Oliver Fisher, Gary Wolstenholme and Robert Dinwiddie, who
were all members of the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup
team, will be competing for first prize the prestigious event
that takes place at Merion Golf Club and the Philadelphia
Country Club from 22nd – 28th August.
Fisher, 16, from West Essex, is the youngest player ever
to compete in the Walker Cup and has achieved a number of
recent successes prior to his Walker Cup selection. He has
taken the first prize in the English Under 16 Championship,
the Lagonda and Douglas Johns Trophies as well as the Essex
men’s and boys Championships.
This year, Fisher has finished joint runner-up in the Brabazon

Amateur Championships and represented England in the World
Boys Team Championships in Japan prior to helping England
triumph in the European Men‘s Team Championship at Hillside.

GB&I's all-time record Walker Cup points scorer. He also
holds the accolade of being England’s most capped player
with 183 matches to his credit and has won many titles during
his career, including two Amateur Championships.
Dinwiddie, who is based at Barnard Castle, has had a year
to remember winning both the Scottish and Welsh Open Strokeplay
Championships in successive weeks before securing his place
in the Walker Cup team. He is no stranger to US golf courses
as this year he graduated from Tennessee State University
in Nashville after four years, during which time he won a
string of tournaments on the college circuit.
The US Amateur can show a long list of now famous names on
its trophy. Former champions include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus,
Lanny Wadkins, Craig Stadler, Mark O'Meara, Hal Sutton, Phil
Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
