ENGLAND BOYS MAKE IT EIGHT WINS IN A ROW AT HOME INTERNATIONALS
England Boys won the Home Internationals for an unprecedented
eighth successive time at Woodhall Spa’s Hotchkin course
on 4th August.
Wales came close to winning the R&A Trophy but the home
side held on to the single point lead they had established
in the morning foursomes for a final 8-7 victory.
The Welsh team looked as though they might have had the upper
hand as the singles matches set off in the afternoon with
Zac Gould, Mark Trow and Adam Runcie winning three of the
opening four matches, but England's playing captain Tom Sherreard
stemmed the tide with a resounding 6 and 5 win. Support then
came from Ben Parker and new caps Tom Haylock and Sam Hutsby
before James Watts secured England’s record of consecutive
victories on the last hole.
On the first two days of the tournament England had to overcome
the handicap of losses in the foursomes each morning but easily
swept to victory on both occasions beating Ireland by nine
matches to six on the first day and then capturing eight of
the ten singles encounters for a comprehensive 10-5 result
against Scotland on day two.
Scotland clinched third place with their only win of the
series against Ireland. Ireland finished without a victory,
losing by 8-7 to Wales and by 9-6 to England.
The victory in the Boys Home Internationals will bring confidence
to both the England mens and seniors teams who will also be
defending their Home Internationals titles on 7th –9th
September at Royal St George’s and 27th – 29th
September at Lahinch.
