ENGLAND BOYS CONTINUE WINNING STREAK AGAINST SPAIN
The England under 16 team has beaten Spain in the annual
international, which took place at Pannal Golf Club, Harrogate
this week.
After a victory in the Boys Home Internationals earlier this
month the talent of England’s under 16’s has once
again become apparent. This was the third playing of the annual
challenge with Spain which England have now won twice and
tied the once in 2004.
The win had its foundations in the foursomes matches when
Tom Lewis (Mid Herts) and Andrew Johnston (North Middlesex)
secured a good win 7 and 5 over their Spanish counterparts.
Darren Renwick (Worthing) and Adam Myers (Northants) held
Spain to a half point in their match.
In the singles matches Lewis and Johnson fared less well
and had to rely on Renwick and Myers to bring home the necessary
2 points for England to take victory in the overall match.
The team had a good pedigree and were confident before teeing
off. Myers is the 2005 English Boys Champion, Johnston is
a former Middlesex under 14 champion and Renwick has already
won the Scottish Under 16 Championship and the Douglas Johns
Trophy this year. Lewis, who replaced Tim Chatfield in the
original team lineup, is joint holder, with Chatfield, of
the Hazards Salver, the under 16 award, presented in the English
Under 18 Championship for the Carris Trophy.
