McEVOY TROPHY WINNER SHERREARD EARNS TRIP TO JAPAN
Tom Sherreard has been rewarded for his stunning victory
in the Peter McEvoy Trophy by being named in the four-strong
England team to compete in the World Boys Team Championships,
which are taking place in Japan in June.
The 18 year old from Kent carded a closing 65 for 278, six
under par, to win the McEvoy at Copt Heath, finishing a stroke
ahead of Leicestershire’s Jake Amos, who is the non-travelling
reserve for the Championships being staged at Chukyo Golf
Club, Toyota City, Aichi-Ken, on 21st - 24th June.
The rest of the team is Oliver Fisher from Essex, Germany-based
Ben Parker, and Yorkshire’s Daniel Willett.
Sherreard, who is completing his ‘A’ Levels at
school in Maidstone, was capped at under 16 level in 2003
and hit the headlines last summer when he finished runner-up
in the British Boys Championships at Conwy. He represented
England in the Turkish Amateur last autumn and was named in
the England under 18 squad this year. He rates his victory
in the McEvoy Trophy as his greatest achievement to date.
Willett, 17, shot a course record 65 at Northumberland Golf
Club in the second round of the Carris Trophy last summer
and accompanied Sherreard to Turkey last year where he finished
tied third. Another member of the under 18 squad, he produced
a solid performance in this year’s Bernard Darwin Salver,
finished runner-up in the Central Wales Boys Championship
before finishing equal third in the McEvoy, two strokes behind
Sherreard.
Fisher, the 16 year old prospect, has already achieved much
in the game. As current holder of the McGregor and Lagonda
Trophies and a member of the 2005 Walker Cup squad, the Essex
lad also reached the quarter finals of the British Boys and
represented Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup in America last
autumn.
Parker, 17, based in Germany where his father is a club professional,
has enjoyed a successful career since reaching the third round
of the British Boys Championships in 2002. He is also a member
of Royal Birkdale and has previously represented Lancashire.
An under 16 international, he won the European Young Masters
in Germany in 2003 and finished third in the McGregor Trophy
that year.
Both Fisher and Parker were members of the England teams
that won the European Boys Team Championship in Finland and
the Boys Home Internationals at Portmarnock in Ireland last
summer. Sherreard and Willett have yet to be capped.
The Team Captain in Japan will be Dr Frank Harkins, a member
of the Junior Golf Committee, while Craig Wagstaff, Deputy
Secretary of the English Golf Union, will be Team Manager.
It will be England’s 11th appearance in the World Junior
Team Championships. They were winners in 1998, ’99 and
2002, runners-up once and third twice.
The other teams in the Championship are Spain, Belgium, United
States, Japan, India, Thailand, New Zealand, South Africa
and Zimbabwe
The Japanese are introducing a Roll of Honour this year,
bearing the names of players who have been successful in the
championship and who have gone on to further success on the
world stage. The first name on that Roll of Honour will be
England’s Justin Rose, who was a key member of the side
during two visits to Japan in the 1990s.
The England team is:
Oliver Fisher (West Essex), Ben Parker (Gut Waldhof), Tom
Sherreard (Chart Hills) and Daniel Willett (Rotherham). Non-travelling
reserve: Jake Amos (Birstall).
