CHAUDHURI SHOOTS 67 TO FINISH AS JOINT WINNER IN PERU
Neil Chaudhuri marked his first ever visit to South America
by finishing joint first in the Peruvian Amateur Championship
at Lima Golf Club.
A closing 67 saw the 20 year old from Leicestershire compile
an aggregate of 287, one under par, to tie with Mario Maya
of Venezuela and Mexico’s Oscar Fraustro.
A playoff took place over the par four 18th hole, which all
three parred at the first time of asking. Fraustro took bogey
at the second attempt and was eliminated. But Chaudhuri and
Maya couldn’t be separated. They each made par twice
more so after three extra holes and with daylight fading the
organisers decided the title should be shared.
"After beginning the last round 11 strokes behind the
leader, I didn’t know I was in a playoff until I walked
off the 18th green," said Chaudhuri.
"But the officials said before we started that if the
playoff wasn’t decided at 5.30pm and with light running
out the title would be shared."
This is Chaudhuri’s second success on foreign soil
this year following his runner-up spot in the Spanish Amateur
at El Saler in March.
Chaudhuri’s fellow England B Squad member Ben Evans,
18, ended in joint 11th place on 293 after closing with a
pair of 71s.
In the team event for the Manuel Prado Cup, the English pair
finished in second place on 580, three strokes behind the
Peru first team.
