TEENAGE QUARTET HEAD FOR TURKISH AMATEUR
Four of England’s most promising youngsters will extend
their experience of international competition after being
selected to play in the Turkish Amateur Championship at Kemer
Golf and Country Club near Istanbul on 30th September - 3rd
October.
The quartet is composed of Steven Capper from Cheshire, Thomas
Haylock from Hertfordshire, Kent’s Tom Sherreard, and
Yorkshire based Daniel Willett. The non-travelling reserve
is Jake Amos from Leicestershire.
Capper, 17, has enjoyed a successful year in which he was
unbeaten in the Four Counties tournament at Beeston Fields,
finished third in the McEvoy Trophy and seventh in the Carris
Trophy. He also finished fourth while representing England
in the Westfriese Young Masters in Holland and was reserve
for the Boys Home Internationals.
Haylock, 17, won the North of England Under 16 Championship
at Pannal as well as the Under 17 title in the Faldo Series
at Royal West Norfolk, while he finished joint winner at Brocket
Hall. He was also named as a reserve for the Westfriese Young
Masters.
The peak of Sherreard’s season came when he reached
the final of the British Boys at Conwy only to be beaten by
Scotland’s Jordan Findlay. The 17 year old has been
a member of England’s School of Excellence for the past
two years, having been capped at Under 16 level. In 2003,
he was a key member of the Kent Boys team, which won the South
East Boys Team Championship.
Willett, 16, hit the headlines when he shot a course record
65 to lead after two rounds of the Carris Trophy at Northumberland
Golf Club in July. The Sheffield teenager eventually finished
tied 13th but had done sufficient to convince everyone he
is a talent. He also represented Yorkshire in the Boys County
Finals at Broadstone last month, emerging unbeaten with five
points from his six matches.
The Turkish Amateur is played over 72 holes of stroke play
with a cut after 36 holes.
The squad for Turkey is:
Steven Capper (Caldy), Thomas Haylock (The Hertfordshire),
Tom Sherreard (Chart Hills), Daniel Willett (Bondhay)
Reserve: Jake Amos (Birstall)
