RICHARDSON WINS PING/EGU ORDER OF MERIT
EGU Elite Squad member Matthew Richardson (The Buckinghamshire
GC) is the PING English Golfer of the Year following an outstanding
season, which saw him win the International European Amateur
Championship and the English Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship
(Brabazon Trophy).
Matt won the PING/EGU Order of Merit scoring 901.71 points,
ahead of fellow Elite Squad members Sam Osborne (Wentworth
GC - 857 points) in 2nd place and James Heath (Coombe Wood
GC - 825 points) in 3rd place.
Commenting on his victory Richardson said, “It is great
to be named PING English Golfer of the year. I have had a
great season which has been a result of my hard work and preparation
through my training programme as part of the EGU’s World
Class Performance Programme.”
Richardson who finished in 5th place in the 2003 PING/EGU
Order of Merit behind winner Gary Wolstenholme had made a
goal for the year to win the order of merit.
Commenting on Matt’s victory, EGU Performance Director
Nigel Furniss explained, “Matt is to be congratulated
for setting out his goals and targets earlier in the year
through a planned and structured schedule. This along with
hard work through his training programme, in particular with
Psychologist Dr. Brian Hemmings, has been a contributory factor
in Matt being named the PING English Golfer of the Year.”
Osborne finished in the runners-up place following victory
in the Berkshire Trophy, 2nd place behind Richardson in the
Brabazon and 3rd place in the St. Andrews Links Trophy. James
Heath was 3rd after his record-breaking win in the Lytham
Trophy and his English Amateur win at Hollinwell.
