ENGLAND FIELD FIVE NEWCOMERS IN UNDER-16’s AGAINST
SCOTLAND
England has named five players new to international team
golf for the annual under-16 clash with Scotland at Woodhall
Spa, Lincolnshire on Sunday 3rd October.
The quintet, Matthew Callanan, Tom Hesketh, Sam Hutsby, Kieran
Lovelock and Darren Renwick, will be making their international
debuts in the 10-strong England squad that will be defending
an unbeaten record in the contest. The rest of the line-up
will be Adam Hodkinson, Tony Mitchell, Tom Oliver, Dale Smith
and James Watts.
All members of the squad are 16 years old apart from Callanan
who is 15, and Renwick, who is 14.
Both Callanan, from Woburn, and Yorkshire-based Hesketh turned
in solid performances in the recent British Boys Championship
at Conwy, Hesketh reaching the fifth round.
Hutsby, from Hampshire, won the Douglas Johns Trophy at Harewood
Downs in July, while Lovelock reached the quarter finals of
the British Boys and was reserve for the recent England v
Spain under 16 international at Pannal.
Renwick, who won’t turn 15 until February, led by five
shots at halfway in the McGregor Trophy at Dudsbury in June
but saw his hopes blown away in the strong winds that plagued
the final day and eventually finished fourth.
Hodkinson, Mitchell, Oliver and Smith formed the England
team that beat Italy in the under 16 international that preceded
the McGregor Trophy at Dudsbury, while Oliver, Smith and Watts
played in the recent under-16 match with Spain at Pannal.
Hodkinson, from Yorkshire, is the current North of England
under 16 champion, while Hertfordshire-based Mitchell represented
the EGU in this year’s European Young Masters tournament
in Austria.
Oliver, from Nottinghamshire, accompanied Mitchell to the
European Young masters then turned in a superb performance
in the English Amateur Championship at Hollinwell in July,
reaching the fifth round.
Only two members of the team, Mitchell and Oliver, played
in the corresponding match with Scotland a year ago at Drumoig.
The Scots are expected to field the team that tied with the
North of England under 16 team at Dumfries recently, a side
that contained British Boys champion Jordan Findlay and Daniel
Torrance, son of former Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance.
The full England team is:
Matthew Callanan (Woburn) Tom Hesketh (Oakdale) Adam Hodkinson
(Dore & Totley) Sam Hutsby (Lee on Solent) Kieran Lovelock
(Hindhead) Tony Mitchell (Redbourn) Tom Oliver (Notts) Darren
Renwick (Worthing) Dale Smith (Saltburn) James Watts (East
Herts)
All the above, plus Nicholas McCarthy (Moortown) and Jack
Senior (Heysham), have been chosen to represent England in
the annual match against the England Girls Under 18 side at
Piltdown Golf Club, Sussex, on Sunday 10 October.
