ASHFORD MANOR STAGES GOLF CAPTAINS TOURNAMENT
A line-up of 81 current or former club captains will gather
at Ashford Manor Golf Club in Middlesex this weekend to compete
in the national final of the newly formatted English Golf
Captains tournament.
The event is played over 36 holes stableford, off handicap,
and replaces the old Individual Membership Scheme Tournament.
270 entries were received in which the leading 80 players
gained entry into the final. The qualifying score was two
under par. In order to complete the field a special invitation
has been given to the captain of Ashford Manor GC, David Soar.
The weekend’s field contains a cross-section of golfers
from the game’s administrators, club secretaries, and
greenkeepers to ordinary members.
Colin Spurr (Harpenden), Chairman of the EGU’s Golf
Services Committee, is competing as is Martyn Senior, the
secretary of Hesketh Golf Club.
Graeme MacDonald, a greenkeeper at Newark, is also playing
along with Michael Holder (The Kendleshire), who led the qualifiers
on ten under.
Philip Parker, Chairman of the English Golf Union, has donated
a trophy, which will be awarded to the winner. Overall, prizes
will be given to the leading ten competitors and to the leading
two scores in each round.
