ENGLISH GOLF UNION INTRODUCES A COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FOR
SENIOR GOLFERS
Following the ever-growing quality and competitive strength
of seniors golf the English Golf Union (EGU) is introducing
a Seniors County Championship in 2005 along the lines of the
highly successful boys and men’s county events.
The magnificent Avening Course at Minchinhampton Golf Club
in Gloucestershire has been chosen as the venue for the first
finals event that will take place from 4th - 6th October 2005.
Numerous golfers reaching the age of 55 are maintaining an
extremely high quality of play with many retaining scratch
handicaps. This has led to counties introducing more seniors
events and leagues in response to the demand for more competitive
opportunities.
The English Men’s Seniors Championship has been highly
successful since it was introduced in 1981 and the British
Seniors Championship has also become a truly international
competition. Furthermore, the introduction of the Seniors
Home Internationals in 2001, this year won by England, is
another indication of the pursuit of top quality golf among
the over 55s.
The introduction of a Seniors County Championship next year
is a natural step to meet the growing appeal for senior competitions
and the event will mirror the boys and men’s County
Championships with the respective winners from the four English
regions - North, Midlands, South East and South West - meeting
at Minchinhampton to decide the national champions.
The proposed format, as with the boys and men’s county
finals, will be three morning foursomes followed by six singles
matches, all over 18 holes.
It will be up to each region to decide which format to adopt
in deciding which of their counties will represent them in
the Finals.
The English Golf Union is deeply indebted to the Committee
of Minchinhampton for allowing this event to be played over
one of their magnificent courses.
