RICHARDSON No 1 FOLLOWING BRABAZON WIN

England Elite Squad member Matthew Richardson (The Buckinghamshire) moves to 1st place in the PING/EGU Order of Merit following his win in the Brabazon Trophy at the weekend.

Matthew, 19 years of age, returned a total of 9 under par 279 (70-69-73-67) over the West Lancashire Golf Club to beat fellow Elite Squad member Sam Osborne (Wentworth) by one stroke.

Osborne who recently finished runner up in the German Amateur was tied for the lead after 3 rounds with Frenchman Julien Millet on 209. His final round of 71 for a total of 280 (69-69-71-71) was his fourth round under par for the tournament but one too many to catch Richardson.

Richardson, an England International, moves up to the No 1 spot in the PING/EGU Order of Merit ahead of James Heath (Coombe Wood) and last years Order of Merit winner Gary Wolstenholme (Kilworth Springs).

Commenting on his victory Matthew explained, “This win is important to me, it is my first major trophy. I now hope I can build on this experience and continue to play well and contend for more major titles.”

Performance Director, Nigel Furniss commented “A great win for Matt who has worked extremely hard this winter to get to this position. His dedication and commitment to his training programme is now beginning to show in his results.”

The up to date PING/EGU Order of Merit can be viewed through the English Golf Union website www.englishgolfunion.org.
