ENGLAND RETAIN SHERRY CUP
England won the European Nations Championship (Sherry Cup)
in Spain on Saturday with an excellent performance to retain
the trophy they won in 2003.
The team of Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow), Ross Fisher
(Wentworth), Michael Skelton (Middlesbrough) and Richard Walker
(Frodsham), all members of the English Golf Union World Class
Performance Programme Elite Squad produced an excellent performance
in testing conditions to defeat teams from 14 other European
Nations.
The event played at Sotogrande Golf Club was reduced to 54
holes due to heavy rain and thunderstorms.
England’s winning total of 637, 11under par was good
enough to beat Italy on 639 into 2nd place and home Nation
Spain on 644 into 3rd place.
Richard Walker, team captain for the tournament, delighted
with the teams performance said “The team stayed focused
on our goal, their performance was superb in testing conditions.
I am delighted for the players and proud to be part of the
winning team for the second year in succession”.
Ross Fisher finished second in the individual event on 211,
5 under par, 4 shots behind Francesco Molinari of Italy.
