EGU TO FOLLOW R&AS LINE ON NON-CONFORMING CLUBS
The English Golf Union is to follow the edict of the Royal
and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews by banning all non-conforming
golf clubs from its competitions as from 1st January 2005.
The decision was taken at the Championship Meeting held at
Woodhall Spa and applied to all EGU events.
This follows a recent meeting of the R&A’s Championship
Committee, which decided to introduce restrictions on driving
clubs at all R & A Championships and international matches
in 2005.
The R&A’s directive states: Driving clubs must
not have a characteristic time greater the 257 microseconds
when measured on pendulum testing apparatus approved by R&A
Rules Limited – see also Appendix II, 5a of the Rules
of Golf.
The R&A announced that the Condition of Competition limiting
the ‘spring-like’ effect of driving clubs will
be introduced at all of its Championships and international
matches from 2005, including all of its Amateur Championships.
The R&A first adopted a test for ‘spring-like’
effect in January 2003 and introduced the Driving Club Condition
of Competition for the first time at an R&A event at the
2003 Open Championship. In 2004, the Condition continues to
be applied only at The Open.
A list of non-conforming clubs is available from the R &
A website www.randa.org
