HIGHER STANDARDS BRING CHANGES IN JUNIOR HANDICAP LIMITS
Improved standards among players plus a higher quality of
entries has persuaded the English Golf Union to lower the
handicap limits for its three junior competitions, the Reid,
McGregor and Carris Trophies.
The rethink was taken by the EGU’s Championship Committee
at its recent meeting at Woodhall Spa and takes note of the
increasing quality in playing abilities among young players
as well as the higher number of international players involved.
The handicap limit for the Reid Trophy (under 14) is reduced
from 15 to nine, that for the McGregor Trophy (under 16) from
nine to five, and for the Carris Trophy (under 18) from five
to three.
Underlining these changes are the fact that 214 entries of
five handicap or better have been received for this year’s
under 16 championship and 191 of three handicap or better
for the under 18 event.
The Championship Committee has also decided to introduce
a Nations Cup in conjunction with the McGregor Trophy. This
will start from 2005 when the McGregor returns to its traditional
home at Radcliffe-on-Trent.
It has also been decided to increase the field for the English
Mid Amateur Championship for the Logan Trophy from 120 to
132 as from this year’s event, which will be staged
at Fairhaven, Lancashire, on 20th-22nd August.
