EGU & ELGA BREAK NEW GROUND
The English Golf Union (EGU) and English Ladies Golf Association
(ELGA) have initiated a joint ground breaking initiative to
train the coaching personnel delivering their National Training
Programmes.
Driven by the World Class Performance Programme (WCPP) funded
through the Sport England Lottery fund, all technical and
sports science and medicine coaches working on National Training
Programmes of EGU and ELGA recently attended the professional
development programme at the National Golf Centre, Woodhall
Spa.
The programme, organised by Keith Williams the EGU National
Coach and personal coach to Volvo PGA Champion Scott Drummond,
involved a four-day psychological training programme. The
“Trained Brain” programme was delivered by Jamie
Edwards, Master Practitioner in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)
and Dr Karl Morris.
The programme is designed to develop coaches to become more
effective in being able to impart and install their existing
technical knowledge when training English golfers on National
Training Programmes.
Deliverer of the “Trained Brain” programme, Karl
Morris, commented, “The coach that is armed with the
skills we teach through our ‘Trained Brain’ Programme
will become extremely valuable in delivering National Training
Programmes.”
Psychology is playing a major role in the delivery of coaching
in golf, to quote Tiger Woods, “My creative mind is
my greatest weapon. It is a kind of inner vision that enables
me to see things that others might not, like a certain way
to play a shot. The psychology of golf can be complicated
as it does entail mental toughness, self-confidence, conquering
inner demons, instant recall of past successes and being able
to purge failures. It is the game within the game, I developed
my mental strength early, I cannot overemphasise the importance
of you developing yours NOW!”
Keith Williams commented, “The programme has been recognised
by the Professional Golfers Association. Each of the PGA professional
coaches attending the course will receive accreditation points
towards their Continued Professional Development programme.”
Nigel Furniss, EGU Performance Director, explained, “It
is important that we invest in the professional development
of the coaches delivering our National Training Programmes
to provide them with the skills to train the players on our
squads. Further programmes are planned for later in the year,
which will involve world renound coach Peter Cowan, delivering
an insight to the latest from the tour and Australian outfit
Golf Biodynamics who will deliver detailed information on
cutting edge biomechanical assessment systems.”
