CORFIELD LEADS PING/EGU ORDER OF MERIT
England Elite Squad member Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow)
moves to the top of the PING/EGU Order of Merit following
his runner’s up spot in the Amateur Championship last
weekend at St. Andrews.
21 year old Corfield has produced a run of consistent performances
over the last month which include winning the West of England
Stroke Play Championship at Royal North Devon GC with a 9
under par total of 279, Tied 15th in the Brabazon Trophy at
West Lancashire GC and tied 8th in the Scottish Stroke Play
Championship at Lundin Links on 10 under par 274.
Last week at St. Andrews he qualified for the match play
stages of the Amateur Championship on 4 under par 140 and
then progressed through to the final where he lost to Scotland’s
Walker Cup star Stuart Wilson.
On moving to the top of the PING/EGU Order of Merit Lee commented
“It was a goal of mine this year to knock Gary Wolstenholme
off the top of the order of merit and now that I have got
there I will be trying desperately hard to stay there.”
Lee now looks forward to competing over the Old and New courses
at St. Andrews this week in the Links Trophy, an event with
a strong international field in which he was runner up last
year to then fellow Elite Squad member Richard Finch.
Sam Osborne (Wentworth) also a member of the EGU Elite Squad
moved up to 4th place in the PING/EGU Order of Merit with
his fine win at the weekend in the Berkshire Trophy. Sam finished
on 20 under par with a total of 267 (66-67-67-67) to edge
out ‘A’ Squad member James Heath (Coombe Wood)
by a stroke. Heath compiled rounds of 69-69-63-67 for a total
of 268.
Osborne’s form has been hot recently with 2nd places
in the German Amateur and also the Brabazon Trophy behind
fellow Elite Squad member Matt Richardson (The Buckinghamshire).
EGU Performance Director Nigel Furniss explained “I
am encouraged by the performances of England squad players
in recent months. They have trained and worked hard to achieve
these results which confirm that English golf is a dominant
force both domestically and internationally.”
