ENGLISH GOLFERS INVITED TO DOWNING STREET
English Golf Union (EGU) Elite Squad and English Ladies Golf
Association (ELGA) young emerging players recently received
an invite to attend a reception at 10 Downing Street with
the Prime Minister, Tony Blair and his wife.
Six players from the EGU Elite Squad, Ross Fisher (Wentworth
GC), Jamie Moul (Stoke-by-Nayland GC), Sam Osborne (Wentworth
GC), Matthew Richardson (The Buckinghamshire), Michael Skelton
(Middlesbrough GC) and Gary Wolstenholme (Kilworth Springs
GC) were accompanied by Paul Baxter, Chief Executive of the
English Golf Union and National Coach Keith Williams.
Justin Rose, 23, currently ranked 60th in the official world
rankings, a former England player at all levels and supporter
of several EGU initiatives was also invited as a young Englishman
who is striving to climb the world rankings.
The English Ladies Golf Association were represented by their
European Girls Championship team: Claire Aitken, Kiran Matharu,
Florentyna Parker and Melissa Reid. The National Junior Coach,
Pat Smillie, and CEO Pauline Perla also attended.
The reception was held to celebrate “This Summer of
Sport” and golf was invited to send representatives
along with football, disabled athletes in a range of sports,
rugby union, rugby league, swimming, squash, tennis, athletics,
cricket, badminton and others. A number of sporting stars
attended such as Colin Jackson, Tessa Sanderson and Frank
Lampard.
The EGU Elite Squad invites were initiated by Sport England
whose Chief Executive Roger Draper commented “We are
delighted that the Prime Minister held a reception for so
many young people involved in a number of different sports
across the country. Sport England’s task is to drive
up participation and success in all sports and it is something
we are working very hard to achieve. These events show both
the support from the highest levels in Government and will
also help encourage people to get active.”
