EGU PRODUCE STRATEGIC PLAN FOR GOLF DEVELOPMENT

Following production of the policy document last year that identified focus areas for developing the game, the strategic plan provides direction and motivation for those working hard at local, regional and national level. It also presents a means by which progress can be measured and sets out the structure and intentions for those outside of the organisation.

This proactive step by the EGU sets out exactly how the EGU intends to move forward, acknowledging the government’s sport and physical activity objectives as highlighted in their ‘Game Plan’ document. With golf being identified by Sport England as a ‘priority’ sport, the strategy will help underpin the partnership between the EGU, ELGA and PGA as part of a Whole Sport Plan (WSP) for golf in England.

In order to oversee the implementation of the strategy, a Golf Development Committee has been formed, made up of those individuals with appropriate expertise and involvement in golf at a grass roots level.

Trevor Williams, Golf Development Committee Chairman comments: “This is a significant move for the EGU and shows its commitment to grass roots development. Now we have a long-term strategy in place we can be more focused in our approach and become a dynamic partner within the Whole Sport Plan for golf in England”.

The golf development strategy considers all age groups, examining current initiatives and the creation of new projects - key areas include promotion & introduction, sustainability, junior golf, monitoring & evaluation, facility provision and volunteers.

All levels of the EGU structure will be embraced and it is crucial that the county and club network is fully utilised. This is a long-term plan and change will not occur overnight, however it is important that a structured and more focused approach to golf development is now in place.

A copy of the summary document is available on the golf development section of the EGU website under ‘The Vision’ – www.englishgolfunion.org
