CRAMPTON CAPTAINS TEAM FOR CHIBERTA GRAND PRIX
James Crampton, winner of the English County Champions tournament
last year, will lead a three-man team in the annual Chiberta
Grand Prix in France next month.
Also selected for the tournament in Biarritz on 15-19 July
are Ross McGowan from Surrey and Hertfordshire‘s James
Ruebotham.
Crampton, 32, who is Deputy Secretary in the Championship
Department of the English Golf Union at Woodhall Spa, won
the County Champions title with birdies at the final two holes
of the Hotchkin course at Woodhall Spa last September to snatch
victory by a stroke.
The Spalding golfer has a fine record within Lincolnshire,
regularly represents the county, and is a current member of
the England B squad.
McGowan, 22, from Banstead Downs, was a member of the Surrey
side that won the Boys County Championship at East Devon in
2000, after which he left for a four-year stint at university
in Tennessee.
Last year he won the St Mellion International Trophy and
reached the last 16 of the English Amateur Championship at
Alwoodley in Leeds. This season has brought him more success
with third place in the Berkshire Trophy while he also qualified
for the Amateur Championship at St Andrews only to go out
in round one at the 24th hole.
Ruebotham, from Welwyn Garden City, is also a member of the
England B squad. The 22 year old is a former Herts Colt champion
and was the county’s Colts captain last year. He enjoyed
a successful 2003, highlighted by four course records in five
days.
His record 63 at Stoke Rochford earned him the Midland Youth
Championship by a clear eight strokes.
This year he finished runner-up in the Berkhamsted Trophy
before winning the King George V Coronation Cup at Porters
Park the following day.
The Chiberta competition is medal stroke play over 72 holes,
with a halfway cut. There is also a team event over the first
two days, two of the three cards to count.
