Baldwin Named as England Boys Captain
Matthew Baldwin, the Lancashire Champion, has been appointed
England captain for the Boys Home Internationals at Royal
Dublin Golf Club on 3-5 August.
His selection is the latest in a long line of successes for
the 18 year old from Hesketh.
An under 16 international for two years from 2001, he was
a member of the Lancashire team that won the Boys County Championship
at Longcliffe in 2001.
He won the McGregor Trophy in difficult conditions at Sheringham,
Norfolk, in 2002, which led to his debut for England Boys
in the Home Internationals at Blairgowrie a few weeks later.
A member of the England School of Excellence since 2002,
Matthew won the Lancashire Boys Championship that same year
and finished sixth in the European Young Masters in Germany.
In 2003, he won the Ashton Trophy at St Anne’s Old
Links, the under 17 title in the Faldo Series at Carden Park,
finished second in the under 17 Faldo Finals at Brocket Hall,
and reached the quarter finals of the English Amateur Championship
at Alwoodley, Leeds.
This season, the talented teenager played in the boys’
team which beat Sweden 14 - 1at Hunstanton, finished tied
sixth in the Brabazon Trophy at West Lancashire, then secured
the Lancashire Championship by three strokes after a closing
67 at Pleasington.
