ELITE SQUAD AIM TO UP FITNESS LEVELS
The English Golf Union’s Elite and Potential A Squad
are due to visit Sheffield Hallam University’s Centre
for Sport and Exercise Science (CSES) in February for physiological
assessments.
Both squads will have the opportunity to use the state-of-the-art
facilities and expertise on offer and will undergo numerous
assessments designed to provide information for coaches and
players, which will ultimately be used to improve performance.
At each session players complete various physiological assessments
including injury and technique analysis. In addition, they
develop a combined physiotherapy, strength and conditioning
profile and have a session with a nutritionist.
EGU National Coach Keith Williams explained, “These
assessments form part of an extremely holistic training programme
which we are developing through the World Class Performance
Programme. The information and data we gather about each player
is most important in helping to direct their individual training
programmes”
The sport science practitioners in consultation with EGU
coaching personnel then produce an integrated development
programme for each player. These programmes are delivered
by the EGU coaching staff who monitor each player throughout
the year specifically at training, practice or competitions.
The EGU has been bringing players to the centre, at the Collegiate
Crescent Campus for the past twelve months through the development
of the EGU’s World Class Performance Programme supported
and funded by the Sport England Lottery Fund.
Nigel Furniss, Performance Director at the EGU, said: “The
relationship we have developed with the Centre for Sport and
Exercise Science is very important to the future development
of our training and coaching programmes. The data we are beginning
to gather from the assessments provides valuable information
which can be used to assist our players with the future direction
of their training programmes in the quest to become World
Class golfers”.
