HEATH IS ENGLISH CHAMPION

James Heath a member of the England Elite Squad from Coombe Wood Golf Club in Surrey is the new English Amateur Champion.

Heath, 21, beat David Horsey (Styal GC) 3&2 in the 36 hole final on Saturday at Notts GC Hollinwell. Heath 3 up following the morning round lost the first two holes after lunch but reeled off consistent golf before closing Horsey out on the 16th green in the afternoon.

James, delighted with his victory commented “My game was solid all week, I put in some gritty performance and the longer I stayed in the tournament the stronger my game became. This win is very special to me and added to the Lytham Trophy it is nice to hold two prestigious major amateur titles. To be National amateur champion of England, a country which produces many great golfers is a real honour.”

James’ victory moves him up to the top of the PING/EGU Order of Merit tied with Surrey colleague Sam Osborne (Wentworth GC) on 825 points, with David Horsey’s runner up spot taking him into the top 20.

Heath will now look forward to the next event in the World Class Performance Programme, the International European Amateur Championship to be played at Skovde Golf Club, Sweden 18th – 21st August.

The up to date PING/EGU Order of Merit can be viewed through the English Golf Union website www.englishgolfunion.org
