CZECH CLEAN SWEEP FOR ENGLISH TRIO
English golfers made a clean sweep of the men’s titles
in the Czech International Amateur Championship at Karlovy
Vary.
Matthew Cryer won the individual championship while the team
of Cryer, Simon Bell and William Bowe collected the Nations
Cup.
Cryer, 29, from Coventry, led by one going into the final
day when a 72 for 281, seven under par, gave him a three-shot
victory over Nie Petr from the Czech Republic.
Twenty-year-old Bell from Yorkshire, was third on 289 after
a closing 79, while Cumbria-based Bowe 21 finished fourth
a shot further back after a 73.
The English trio comfortably won the Nations Cup, decided
over the first two rounds, finishing on nine under par 279,
six strokes ahead of the Czech’s second team with Germany
third on three over par 291.
"It was a superbly organised and run tournament on a
great course”, said Cryer, the double Warwickshire champion.
"The weather was fine for the practise days and for the
first two days of the tournament, but there was a lot of rain
overnight for the final two nights which made the course play
long, while the last two days were also windy”.
"Winning means a lot to me because I’ve put myself
in positions to win 72 hole tournaments a number of times
in the past two years and this is the first time I’ve
managed to achieve it”.
"I was confident I would eventually win and that it
was only a matter of time, but until you’ve done it
there is always that doubt. Now that I’ve broken my
duck, hopefully this will turn my career around and lead to
other chances".
