ENGLAND ELITE SHINE IN THE SUN
The English Golf Union Elite Squad enjoyed the sun at the
weekend with Lee Corfield winning the West of England Open
Stroke play at Royal North Devon GC and Sam Osborne and Ross
Fisher winning the Nations Cup at the International German
Amateur Championship.
Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow GC) posted scores of 72-69-68-70
for a total of 279 to finish 9 under par, 2 shots ahead of
EGU A Squad player Lawrence Dodd (Thetford GC) on 281, 7 under,
with rounds of 73-73-69-66. Fellow A Squad member Paul Waring
(Bromborough GC) who was leading going into the final round
finished 3rd with rounds of 73-70-65-76 for a 4 under total
of 284.
Lee’s victory takes him into 2nd place in the PING/EGU
Order of Merit behind leader Adam Gee from Leatherhead.
In Germany Sam Osborne (Wentworth GC) and Ross Fisher (Wentworth
GC) won the Nations Cup at the International German Amateur
Championship played at Golf Club Elfrather Mühle near
Düsseldorf. Their total of 274, 14 under par put them
six shots clear of Germany on 280.
In the Individual event Osborne, who recently played all
four rounds in the Portuguese Open on the PGA European Tour
came close to his first major international title finishing
in 2nd place on 7 under par 209 one shot behind the winner
Maximilian Cramer of Germany. Ross Fisher continued his good
run of form to finish in 3rd place on 5 under 211.
Osborne was leading after two rounds with 69-64 but fell
away in the final round with a 76. Fisher who has recently
won the Sunningdale Foursomes, finished second in the Sherry
Cup and was part of the winning England Team that won the
European Nations Championship continued his consistent form
with rounds of 72 -69 -70.
Performance Director Nigel Furniss commented “I am
pleased with the players’ performances. Following recent
training sessions we were expecting a good performance from
Ross, Lee and Sam. Whilst Sam will be disappointed to have
missed out on his first international victory he has shown
the flair and talent that we know he is capable of.”
Furniss is confident that Sam’s performance was helped
by recent training with EGU National Coach, Keith Williams
carried out at the National Golf Academy , Woodhall Spa.
The Elite and A Squad players will now move their attention
to the Lytham Trophy to be played at Royal Lytham and St.Annes
Golf Club 30th April – 2nd May.
The Elite Squad is part of the English Golf Union’s
World Class Performance Programme supported by funding through
Sport England Lottery Fund.
