ELITE TRIO ARE BOUND FOR GERMANY
Three of England's World Class Performance Elite Squad will
represent the EGU in the 54-hole German International Open
Amateur Championship near Krefeld next week.
The trio, Suffolk's Jamie Moul and the Wentworth duo of Ross
Fisher and Sam Osborne, will be at the Golfclub Elfrather
Muhle on 23-25 April hoping to bring the title back for the
second time in three years.
Moul and Osborne are due to make their full England debuts
against France at Royal St George's, Sandwich, early next
month, while Fisher collected his first full cap a year ago
in the European Men's Team Championships in Holland and also
played in the Home Internationals in Ireland.
Moul, the 19 year old from the Stoke-by-Nayland club, was
a reserve for last year's Home Internationals and his promotion
follows two highly successful years.
In 2002 he won the Hampshire Salver after finishing runner-up
in the Hampshire Hog and Selborne Salver and he also finished
second in the Carris Trophy.
Last year the Colchester-based youngster finished third in
the Irish Open Amateur and joint fourth in the Welsh Amateur
Stroke play, and emerged triumphant in the South East Qualifying
at Ealing after a second round 62.
Moul has been a boy cap since 2000 and represented GB&I
in the 2002 Jacques Leglise Trophy, emerging with an unbeaten
record.
Moul moved into the England Elite Squad last autumn and this
term has been to South Africa and Puerto Rico on England training
and to the United States for the Hall of Fame tournament.
Osborne, 22, was a surprise semi-finalist in the 2002 English
Amateur Championship at Walton Heath, losing to Richard Finch,
the eventual champion. Last summer he and Moul represented
the EGU at the Chiberta Grand Prix in France.
He was also a reserve for last September's Home Internationals,
reached the quarterfinals of the Amateur Championship and
finished third in the St Andrews Links and the Lagonda Trophies.
He was included in the Elite Squad in October and went to
Australia for the Lake Macquarie tournament and the New South
Wales Medal early this year, the Hall of Fame tournament in
Houston, United States as well as to South Africa for warm
weather training.
Fisher, the oldest of the trio at 23, enjoyed a highly successful
2003. The tall, big-hitter made his full England debut in
the European Men's Team Championship in Holland in July, having
just finished as joint winner of the Berkshire Trophy with
Australian Andrew Blyth.
This year, Fisher has successfully represented England in
the Sherry Cup as well as being a member of the training squads
in South Africa and Puerto Rico. He will also face France
at Royal St George's next month, a call that followed his
and professional Simon Griffiths' second successive victory
in the Sunningdale Foursomes last month.
Two years ago Richard Walker, another Elite Squad member,
won the German title at Am Alten Fliess near Cologne with
a five-under-par total of 211, finishing six strokes ahead
of Martin Wiegele of Austria.
The German Championship will be played over 54 holes stroke
play with a cut after round two. There will also be a Nations
Cup running alongside the main event comprising three-man
teams, this being decided on the two best scores of each team
over the first two rounds.
