TEENAGE QUARTET HEAD FOR TURKISH AMATEUR
Four members of England’s School of Excellence will
extend their experience of international competition after
being selected to play in the Turkish Amateur Championship
at Kemer Golf and Country Club on 2nd-5th October.
Laurence Allen, Matthew Baldwin, Alex MacGregor and Grant
Slater, all 17 year olds, will compete in the 72-hole Championship
near Istanbul after all enjoyed a successful season at home.
Allen, from Hertfordshire, was capped at Under-16 level against
Scotland last autumn having been reserve against Italy. This
year, he finished third in the South East Junior Championship
at Sunningdale, then underlined his potential by reaching
the semi-finals of the English Amateur Championship at Alwoodley.
Baldwin won the McGregor Trophy, the English Under-16 Stroke
Play Championship at Sheringham last year then became Lancashire
Boys Champion. He was also capped at Under-16 level against
Italy and Spain and also played in the Boys Home Internationals.
This year, the Hesketh lad won the Faldo Series at Carden
Park and represented England in the Westfriese Junior Masters
in Holland. He also enjoyed a successful English Amateur at
Alwoodley, reaching the quarterfinals.
MacGregor and Slater were foursomes partners in the Cornwall
team for last year’s Boys County Finals at St Anne’s
Old Links. MacGregor has been an Under-16 international for
the past two years and made his Under-18 debut in the Westfriese
Masters.
The 6’ 4" tall Cornishman, who helped England
win the Boys Home Internationals in Wales last month, finished
seventh in the McEvoy Trophy in April and ended a shot behind
the winners in the Carris Trophy at Burnham & Berrow.
Slater, who led the Carris Trophy from start to finish only
to share the title with Yorkshire’s Danny Denison, is
a former Cornwall Boys and South West Boys Champion. He was
capped at Under-16 level against Scotland and the England
Girls Under-18 side last year then made his Under-18 debut
in the recent Boys Home Internationals.
The squad for Turkey is:

Matthew Baldwin (Hesketh)
Alex MacGregor (Killiow)
Grant Slater (Carlyon Bay)
