DODD WINS GREEK TITLE BY NINE STROKES
Lawrence Dodd from Suffolk, on his first overseas assignment
for the English Golf Union, won the Greek International Amateur
Championship at Glyfada Golf Club near Athens.
The 20 year old from Bury St Edmunds finished on nine under
par 279, ten strokes ahead of Suffolk teammate Jamie Moul,
who finished runner-up, with Eddie Vernon, the third member
of the squad, fifth on 295.
The England team were also clear winners of the Nations Cup,
played over the first three days with the best two cards to
count. They finished on 418, 25 strokes clear of Italy with
the Czech Republic third on 446.
Dodd, a former Suffolk Champion, led from start to finish.
He opened with a two under par 70 to lead Vernon by two, then
added a 67 to go eight clear of Moul.
When Moul returned a third round 68 it cut Dodd’s lead
to six, but the Bury man finished with 72, which included
a double-bogey six on the final hole.
Dodd was the only player to finish under par and his victory
maintains the English run of successes in the championship.
The title has come to England for the past three years through
Daniel Wardrop, James Heath and now Dodd, while other past
winners have included Jim Payne, John Wells and Simon Robinson.
