GOLF PRAISED FOR EQUITY AWARD
Collective work by England’s golfing authorities has
successfully resulted in the achievement of the Preliminary
Level of the Sporting Equals Achieving Racial Equality: A
Standard for Sport. Over the last twelve months fifty-one
governing bodies of sport, sports partnerships and sports
organisations have achieved the Preliminary Level.
The English Golf Union, the English Ladies Golf Association,
Golf Foundation and the Professional Golfers Association joined
together to present a united statement of intent to oppose
discrimination in golf.
A comprehensive portfolio of evidence to support the application
was presented to the Standard Assessment panel made up of
representatives from Sporting Equals and other sports Governing
bodies for their adjudication.
Karl Spracklen, National Development Manager for Sporting
Equals stated that “The Assessment Panel were particularly
impressed by the way golf’s governing bodies had worked
together on equity and the clear commitment to continue this
joint working in the future. Credit must be given to the equity
group formed by the Governing bodies and the members of that
group who have steered the work on equity and racial equality
in an effective and meaningful way”.
Neil Hayward, EGU Assistant Secretary commented “The
signing of The Charter for Racial Equality, the approval and
adoption of our Equity Policy by our Executive Committee and
the Executive Committees of ELGA, the PGA and Golf Foundation
and the success in achieving the Standard for Sport make a
clear statement that the world of golf is united in welcoming
all-comers to join in and enjoy this wonderful game”
