ENGLAND LOOK TO ADD SHERRY CUP
The English Golf Union Elite Squad will be looking to add
the Sherry Cup, European Nations Championship, to the Nations
Cups they have already won this year at the Lake Macquarie
Amateur Championship in Australia and the International Portuguese
Amateur Championship.
Four members of the World Class Performance Programme Elite
Squad - Richard Finch, Zane Scotland, Richard Walker and Gary
Wolstenholme - will be representing England in the European
Nations Cup event at Royal Sotogrande on 2-5 April.
Walker, fresh from his success in the Portuguese Amateur
last week and set to defend the German Amateur title at the
end of April, will be keen to complete an overseas title hat-trick.
Finch, winner of the Spanish Amateur Championship three years
ago, and Scotland, who lifted the Spanish and Portuguese titles
in 2002, will be hoping for further success on the Iberian
Peninsula.
Completing the party, Wolstenholme will be seeking his third
victory in the Sherry Cup having won the individual title
twice, in 2000 and 2001. However, since the tournament was
revamped last year, the main target is the European Nations
Cup involving teams of four over 72 holes.
The best three cards each day count, while the individual
contest runs alongside this prestigious event whose previous
winners include the likes of Padraig Harrington (1991), and
Sergio Garcia (1997 and 1998). If the Championship ends in
a tie, the teams involved will nominate one player to compete
in a sudden death play-off. The winners will receive the Nations
Trophy as well as a replica for every member of the team.
The individual competition will run simultaneously with the
Nations Championship, the champion will collect a Gold Sherry
Wine Trophy and the Amateur Masters Jacket.
The England Team will be accompanied by Cecil Bloice, England
Captain.
