SELL AND YOUNG CARRY THE FLAG DOWN MEXICO WAY
Martin Sell and Martin Young, members of England's Potential
'A' Squad, have been invited to represent England in the Copa
Monterrey in Mexico on 3-6 April.
Sell, the 24-year-old from Wiltshire, hit the headlines last
year when he beat a string of internationals on his way to
the final of the Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl only
to lose to Spaniard Alejandro Larrazabal.
After being called into the England 'A' Squad, Sell has carried
that form into this year by reaching the semi-finals of the
Spanish Amateur Championship only to go down to another Spaniard,
Alvaro Quiros.
Sell, from the Wrag Barn club near Swindon, also qualified
for the recent Portuguese Amateur but went out in the second
round to England international Richard Walker, the eventual
champion.
A former Wiltshire Matchplay champion, Sell has represented
his county since 2000 as well as the South West of England
last year in a memorable birdie-laden match with Gary Wolstenholme.
When the contest finished on the 14th green 5 and 4 in Wolstenholme's
favour, Sell was five under par.
Sell was called up by England for the Chiberta Grand Prix
in France last August and now his potential has been recognised
again, while it will be a first overseas representative honour
for Young, a stalwart of Hampshire golf for many years.
The 32-year-old from Brokenhurst Manor won the Hampshire
Salver and the Lagonda Trophy in 2000 and reached the quarter
finals of the English Amateur Championship at Saunton a year
later. But further success, particularly within Hampshire,
has eluded Young although he has been included in England
squads for the past two years.
The Copa Monterrey tournament will be played as a two-man
team throughout with a different format adopted each day.
The competition opens with a Scramble followed by a Better
Ball on day two, Foursomes on day three and closes with an
aggregate strokeplay round.
