ELITE SQUAD SHARPEN UP FOR A BUSY SEASON
England's World Class Performance Programme Elite Squad will
complete their preparations for a busy season ahead which
starts with the Sherry Cup in early April, by attending their
fourth training session of the winter this week.
The 12-strong squad will be at The National Golf Centre,
Woodhall Spa, for three days, 26-28 March, during which they
will be put through their paces both on and off the golf course.
As part of their integrated programme, players will continue
to receive training support delivered by experts from the
English Institute of Sport and the UK Sports Institute Athlete
Career and Education (ACE) programme. The ACE programme will
deliver a cutting-edge presentation and offer solutions on
"Dealing with the Media".
This week's training session will focus on many aspects of
the game that should give the Elite Squad their final preparations
for the forthcoming campaign. Coaches, Keith Williams, David
Ridley and Gary Smith will be offering technical support to
help players' long and short game requirements as well as
course management.
EGU National Coach, Keith Williams commented "This series
of training sessions had been the most productive and pro-active
delivered by the EGU to date. The influence of the World Class
Performance Plan has had a marked effect! "
On the Sports Science and Sports Medicine side, following
laboratory testing at Sheffield Hallam University, which included
biomechanical assessment, diet and nutrition and in-depth
physiological testing, Paul Darby will handle the fitness
and physiotherapy aspects while Brian Hemmings, sports psychologist,
will work with the players to enhance all aspects of mental
training.
Equipment manufacturers Adidas, Callaway, Cleveland, Oakley,
Ping, Taylor Made, and Titleist, will be in attendance to
offer expert advice and equipment support to all the squad.
As well as the manufacturers in attendance the Elite Squad
also receive support and advice from Activator Sports, Golf
Pride Grips and True Temper.
EGU Performance Director Nigel Furniss explained "This
is an important session for the Elite Squad, detailed preparations
will be made to ensure we meet our goals and targets for the
season"
The Elite Squad of players comprises:

Richard Walker (Frodsham), Daniel Wardrop (Didsbury), Gary
Wolstenholme (Kilworth Springs)
Following the training session, four of the squad - Richard
Finch, Zane Scotland, Richard Walker and Gary Wolstenholme
- will then fly to Spain to compete in the annual Sherry Cup
at Royal Sotogrande on 2-5 April.
