SKELTON WINS WELSH TITLE
England Elite Squad member Michael Skelton (Middlesbrough
GC) won the Welsh Open Stroke Play title on Sunday at Prestatyn
Golf Club.
Skelton’s 10 under par total of 278 (71, 72, 67 &
68) gave him a three shot victory over Richard Moir of Australia
and Cyan Mills from the Vale of Glamorgan. England A Squad
member Jamie Moul (Stoke by Nayland GC) returned 282 to take
a share of fourth place.
Commenting on his victory Michael said, “Following
a reasonable performance in the Brabazon I was very disappointed
to miss the cuts at both the Links Trophy and the Amateur
Championship. I prepared well for the Welsh Stroke Play and
it paid off.”
EGU Performance Director Nigel Furniss explained, “Another
great English performance, I am delighted for Mike. The Elite
squad have excelled themselves recently, with wins in the
Brabazon Trophy (Jon Lupton), St.Andrews Links Trophy (Richard
Finch), Amateur Championship (Gary Wolstenholme), Scottish
Stroke Play Championship (Gary Wolstenholme) and now the Welsh
Stroke Play Championship. This demonstrates the current strength
of English Golf.”
Michael’s win moves him up to 9th place in the PING/EGU
Order of Merit. The up to date PING/EGU Order of Merit can
be viewed through the English Golf Union website, www.englishgolfunion.org.
The Elite Squad now look forward to a two day training camp
at Woodhall Spa, 24th-25th June, for a review of the season
to date and to make preparations prior to departure to the
European Men’s Team Champion in Holland 1st - 5th July.
