FISHER MOVES UP TO ELITE SQUAD
The English Golf Union has promoted Ross Fisher (Wentworth
GC) to the Elite Squad.
Fisher, 22, moves up to replace Zane Scotland who has decided
to join the professional game following some solid performances
during the first half of 2003. Having won the Sunningdale
Foursomes in March, Fisher finished 10th in the Lytham Trophy,
9th in the Brabazon Trophy at Hunstanton and was joint winner
of the Berkshire Trophy with Andrew Blyth from Australia.
He has also been selected to represent England in the European
Men's Team Championship in The Hague in early July.
Delighted with his inclusion Fisher said "I have been
working hard on my game to improve this year. My inclusion
in the Elite squad is very exciting and reward for all the
hard work, it will now give me further opportunities to develop
my game."
Scotland, 20, represented England at Men's, Youths and Boys
level. He played 24 times at men's level, represented Great
Britain & Ireland in the Jacques Leglise Trophy and the
St. Andrews Trophy. He was also a member of the winning English
teams in the 2001 Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup in Argentina and
the 2003 Sherry Cup in Spain.
Individually he has an impressive record of achievements,
he was the youngest player to qualify for the Open Championship
at Carnoustie in 1999. He won the McEvoy Trophy in 2000. In
2002 he picked up the Spanish and Portuguese Amateur Championships,
the Dutch under 21 title and the Dunes Medal in Australia.
Performance Director Nigel Furniss commented "Whilst
we are sorry to lose Zane from the Elite Squad set up we hope
he will go on to realise his huge potential and develop into
a World Class golfer. I am also delighted for Ross who is
a very exciting player and has shown some great form so far
this season, he will be a great asset to the Elite Squad."
The Elite Squad is part of the English Golf Union's World
Class Performance Programme supported by funding through Sport
England Lottery Fund.
The long-term aim of the programme is to systematically produce
a regular stream of English players with the ability to perform
successfully on the world stage.
