BALDWIN AND HUNTER SET TO GO DUTCH
Matthew Baldwin (Hesketh), the current under-16 champion,
and McEvoy Trophy winner Tommy Hunter (Ilford) have been included
in a six-strong England squad to compete in the Westfriese
Junior Masters in Holland on 21-22 June.
The rest of the squad is Daniel Denison (Howley Hall), Ben
Evans (Rye), Martyn Hamer (Worsley Park Marriott), and Alex
MacGregor (Killiow Park). The non-travelling reserve is Paul
Grannell (Sandiway).
It will be the first time England has sent players to this
well-established 54-hole tournament, which will be preceded
by an Am-Am.
Baldwin, 17, a former Lancashire Boys champion, won the under-16
McGregor Trophy at Sheringham last July, which earned him
a place in the Boys Home Internationals as well as under-16
caps against Scotland and the England Girls under-18 side.
This will be Hunter's first England representative honour
and comes in the wake of his one-shot McEvoy success at Copt
Heath in April after which he was named as non-travelling
reserve for the World Boys Team Championships in Japan.
Denison will also be enjoying his maiden representative honour.
The 18 year old finished runner-up in the 2001 McGregor Trophy
at Radcliffe on Trent and was a member of the Yorkshire side
that won last year's Boys County Championship at St Annes
Old Links. Denison also created course records at Scarcroft
and Howley Hall last year.
Evans, 16, finished runner-up in the under-14 Reid Trophy
in 2000 and has since been capped at under-16 level against
Italy, Spain and Scotland.
Hamer, 17, the newly-crowned Lancashire Boys champion, made
his under-16 debut against Scotland in 2001 having been a
member of the Lancashire side that won the Boys County Championship
at Longcliffe that same year. He recently finished tied 14th
in the Brabazon Trophy at Hunstanton.
MacGregor, 17, was a member of the Cornish side in last year's
Boys County Finals at St Annes Old Links and was also capped
at under-16 level against Italy and Scotland.
The squad will form two teams in the Westfriese event, Denison,
Hunter and Hamer making up the under-18 squad and Baldwin,
Evans and MacGregor the under-17 side.
In the Westfriese tournament, 27 holes will be played on
day one after which a cut will be made with the survivors
playing the final 27 holes on the following day.
